The article presents a scientific and methodological analysis of the conceptual foundations of the study of the problem of the process of socialization in various related sciences, the author’s definitions of the concepts of “socialization” and “successful socialization”, a brief analysis of the concepts of socialization of the personality of a child brought up in an institution that replaces the family, the results of the study of the psychological and pedagogical features of the development of the personality of a child brought up in a substitute families (intellectual development, development of emotional and volitional sphere, forms of situational and personal communication, formation of the structure of self-consciousness, features of gender-role identification), the main tasks of the socio-pedagogical activity of children’s institutions replacing the family and directions for the successful socialization of pupils are presented: social, pedagogical, socio-psychological, medico-social, correctional-developing and patronizing; the optimal principles are presented (respect for the personal dignity of the child, the principle of trust in a minor, the principle of voluntariness, the principle of respect for the interests of a minor, the principle of competence, the principle of sincerity, the principle of naturalness in professional activity and the principle of independence and sufficiency as a person capable of attracting children), recommended methods and forms of special work with children brought up in institutions replacing the family.
