The author of the article notes that for the effective functioning of a higher educational institution the presence and constant updating of reliable and complete information about its condition, conditions and features of development are required. Regular diagnostics and monitoring of all changes in
the dynamics are necessary for making management decisions aimed not only at ensuring the functioning of the University, but also to improve its quality.
One of the factors contributing to the formation of a successful management system is the feedback, which is possible through the procedure of assessing the activities of the University. Increasing interest in the problems of assessing the activities of universities both in our country and abroad can be attributed
to the fact that the needs of society in education have become much more diverse. The development of higher professional education has increased the need to find new approaches to assessing the functioning of universities.
The article considers the American experience, namely the organization of monitoring and evaluation of higher education in the United States of America. In preparing the material, regulatory documents, articles, dissertations, and other scientific works of domestic and foreign researchers were studied and analyzed.
The author concludes that American higher education institutions conduct multidimensional studies during accreditation. The accreditation procedure for them is a voluntary decision on the part of the University and is aimed at identifying ways to further improve the quality of the University, improve the
education system as a whole, and not to eliminate certain shortcomings.
