The article presents diagnostics and prospects for archival materials using by students in history classes. The article reveals a significance of historical sources, their role in the formation of research skills among students in the process of organizing work with historical documents. The process of thinking and
imagination is activated among students when working with archival documents, which contributes to more fruitful assimilation of historical knowledge and the development of historical consciousness. Students develop their skills for independent work. These skills include reading documents, analyzing, and extracting information, and evaluation of documents. The article presents results of a survey among 147 students in «History-Religious Studies», «History-Geography» at Pavlodar State Pedagogical University. The study used
WhatsApp application and Google Forms platform. The analysis was carried out on the study of archival documents by students on the conquest of the territory of South Kazakhstan by the Russian Empire in the middle of the 19th century. The analysis showed that students are familiar only with basic techniques of work.
These techniques include extracts of definitions, concepts, highlighting the main idea and collective analysis of the text. The results obtained allow us to identify problems and design further work in the classroom for students in Historical Sciences.
