The article is devoted to the study of the possibilities of using the focus group method to study
nomophobia among students in Kazakhstan. The relevance of this study is determined by the active use of
mobile gadgets around the world, their inclusion in all areas of human activity, the increase in the number of
users, the expansion of the capabilities of modern mobile devices and the increase in the time spent interacting
with a cell phone. The article discusses the methods of studying nomophobia, presents the results of a study
of nomophobia among young people in Kazakhstan. The novelty of the study lies in the first attempt to use
the focus group method to obtain extended information about the manifestation of nomophobia among young
people. The article presents the results of six focus groups conducted with students from two universities in
Kazakhstan: L.N. Gumilyov Eurasian National University (Nur-Sultan) and the Kazakh Academy of Labor
and Social Relations (Almaty). Focus groups were devoted to the study of 10 questions about the degree of
manifestation of nomophobia among young people, its personal predictors, connection with other gadgets and
Internet addiction, and mechanisms that regulate the degree of its manifestation among young people. The
article describes the procedure for conducting the study and the results obtained. After analyzing the data, the
article provides an analysis of the focus group method itself as a tool for obtaining data on nomophobia among
young people in Kazakhstan and sets goals for further research on nomophobia.
