The issue of learning and teaching a foreign language remains one of the most relevant today. The communicative foreign language teaching plays an important role in the teaching field. However, the communicativemethod, like allmethods, issubject to criticism due to variousfactors. The article discusses various
points of view regarding the effectiveness of the communicative approach application. Some methodologists and linguists note the negative aspects and assert that this method is outdated. Also, they believe that it requires
replacement because it does not cover many factors (not enough attention is paid to the formation of grammatical skills, such types of speech activities as reading, and writing are left without attention). Others consider it as the most progressive and effective method. At the same time, they think that problems of communicative learning are caused, first, by misconceptions about its implementation in the classroom. The study presents an analysis of the methodological and scientific literature published in recent years to identify a critical assessment of whether criticism of the communication method is related to its weaknesses or to problems of its application misconceptions.
